Lecture on Archaeological Investigations at New Philadelphia

Lecture on Archaeological Investigations at New Philadelphia

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Tuesday, February 08, 2011, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

On Tuesday, February 8, 2011, Dr. Terrance Martin, Curator and Chair of Anthropology at the Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Illinois, will give a presentation on the 2010 Season at the New Philadelphia archaeological site in west central Illinois.  The lecture is at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown, Illinois as part of the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society, which is open to the public.

Founded in 1836 on a tract of land in west central Illinois owned by a formerly enslaved African American, New Philadelphia was envisioned to be an economic hub for an agrarian community. Lots were purchased by both European Americans and African Americans, and the town was occupied through the early 1900s. Funded by a two grants from the National Science Foundation, field investigations are contributing information on architectural foundations, cisterns, cellars, artifact patterns and foodways, while historical research is providing information on regional and ethnic backgrounds of residents as well as their occupations. The fifth field season of fieldwork focused on locating and exposing the foundations of one of the most significant buildings in the community, the house owned by Louisa McWorter, the daughter-in-law of New Philadelphia’s founder Free Frank McWorter.

IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome.  For more information call 309.547.3721.
