Eagle Day Festival

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Saturday, February 05, 2011, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Dickson Mounds Museum is the location for a day-long Eagle Day Festival on Saturday, February 5, 2011.  This event, which is co-sponsored by the Dickson Mounds Museum, the Emiquon Audubon Society, Fulton County Arts Council, the Havana Library District, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Mason County Arts Council, The Nature Conservancy, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is free to the public.

Two special exhibits will be on display: the Illinois Winter Wildlife Photography Show which is open to residents in Fulton and Mason Countries, and Eagle Art and Poetry created by students from Fulton and Mason Counties.  These exhibits will be on display through March 1, 2011.

From 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. members of the Emiquon Audubon Society and Dickson Mounds will have different hands on activities for youth, including a Birds in the Past Scavenger hunt in the museum’s exhibits.

At 10:30 a.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. the Wildlife Prairie Park, Edwards, Illinois will present a one-hour program with live birds of prey.  Admission is free, but tickets must be picked up in the lobby of the museum for the shows as seating is limited to 150.

At Noon there will be a showing of the movie American Eagle in the museum auditorium.  This hour-long  movie, from the award winning PBS Series “Nature”, focuses on the bald eagle.  Once on the brink of extinction, the bald eagle is one of America’s triumphant comeback stories.  Filmed in high definition, this riveting program takes an unprecedented look at this remarkable bird and its surprisingly tough struggle to survive.

Also on February 5 from 8:00 a.m. to Noon volunteers will be available in the Havana Riverfront Park to help visitors spot eagles.

The Fulton and Mason County Arts Councils will sell food for lunch, the proceeds of which will fund their respective programs.

The Illinois State Museum - Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97.  The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day.  Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations.  For more information call 309.547.3721 or TTY 217.782.9175 or visit the museum's web site at www.museum.state.il.us/ismsites/dickson/ .
