Lecture on A Protohistoric Iroquoian Gorget from Near Alton, Illinois

Lecture on A Protohistoric Iroquoian Gorget from Near Alton, Illinois

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Monday, November 01, 2010, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

On Tuesday, November 1, 2010, Dr. Dr. Lawrence Conrad, Western Illinois University, will give a presentation on A Protohistoric Iroquoian Gorget from Near Alton, Illinois.  The lecture is at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds as part of the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society, which is open to the public.

In the late 1800s, a sea shell carved into the shape of a turtle was found in a prehistoric burial mound along the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois.  Few details about the mound are available, but the artifact was long thought to date to about A.D. 1000.  Dr. Conrad will discuss evidence that it is in fact much later and may indicate the presence of Iroquois Indians in the area in the late 1600s.

IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome.  For more information call 309.547.3721.
