Lecture on the Furture of the Study of Ancient Human Skeletal Remains

Lecture on the Furture of the Study of Ancient Human Skeletal Remains

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Tuesday, October 05, 2010, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

On Tuesday, October 5, 2010, Dr. Michael Wiant, Dickson Mounds Museum Director, will give a presentation on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) titled “NAGPRA at 20: Has Anything Changed?”  The lecture is at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds as part of the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society, which is open to the public.

In 1990 Congress passed the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.  In short, the law established new regulations concerning the discovery of Native American remains on federal land, required museums to submit a comprehensive inventory of Native American human skeletal remains, associated funerary objects, and other items in their collection to the National Park Service, and provided an opportunity to Native Americans to request the repatriation of human remains and objects.  Two decades after its implementation, Wiant considers the impact of the legislation on museums and current and future anthropological research.

IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome.  For more information call 309.547.3721.
