Seeing without Digging: Remote Sensing at the Morton Village Site

Seeing without Digging: Remote Sensing at the Morton Village Site

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Tuesday, September 07, 2010, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

On September 7, 2010 at 7 p.m. in the Dickson Mounds Museum auditorium, Dr. Michael Conner will review the three seasons of excavations at the Morton Village site on The Nature Conservancy's Emiquon Preserve conducted by Dickson Mounds Museum and Michigan State University. Although work this year was greatly hampered by the summer's wet weather, 5 acres were surveyed using a magnetometer.  The survey revealed a high density of pits and structures at the site, and indicates that it may cover a much larger area than originally thought.  The site represents a village occupied by native peoples of the Mississippian and Oneota cultural traditions around A.D. 1300.  Refreshments will be served following a brief business meeting after the presentation.

IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome. For more information call 309.547.3721.
