Hickory Ridge Concert Series: Smithfield Fiddlers

The Hickory Ridge Concert Series will ring with the sounds of old time fiddle as Smithfield brothers John and Stephen Lane take the stage Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. with an evening of mixed styles. As John says, “It’s some old-time, some Texas-style, some New England contra-style, and some Don Messer-style Ontario stuff.”
John and Stephen Lane are two young fiddlers from Smithfield, Illinois. They grew up around music and have been fiddling around Western Illinois most of their lives. After learning some old time fiddling from a number of local players, they branched out into Texas style and piano-driven New England styles. Over the years, they have attended many camps and workshops around the country and competed in contests around the Midwest region. John teaches annually at the youth fiddle camp in Bethel, Missouri and recently played fiddle at the Saturday evening dance at the Midwest Folk Festival.
The Dickson Mounds Branch of the Illinois State Museum is located between Lewistown and Havana off routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day.
