  Lecture on Black Hawk War

Lecture on Black Hawk War

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Tuesday, August 04, 2009, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

On Tuesday, August 4, 2009, Dr. Michael Wiant, Dickson Mounds Museum Director, will give a presentation on the Black Hawk War.  The lecture is at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds as part of the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society, which is open to the public.

In 1804, four Sauk and Fox leaders by treaty ceded the land between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.  The circumstances of the negotiations and the language of the treaty spawned disagreement among many of the tribe and a Sauk warrior, Black Sparrow Hawk, in particular.   In 1832, Black Hawk and more than 1,500 Sauk men, women, and children, attempted to return to Saukenuk (Rock Island), their former principal village.  This would be the first in a series of events that led to the decimation of the group and severely undermined Native American resistance to American settlement east of the Mississippi River.

IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome.  For more information call 309.547.3721.
