June IVAS Lecture at Dickson Mounds Museum

June IVAS Lecture at Dickson Mounds Museum

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Tuesday, June 02, 2009, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

On Tuesday, June 2, 2009, Dr. Jodie O'Gorman of Michigan State University (MSU) and Dr. Michael Conner of Dickson Mounds Museum will give a presentation on recent research at the Morton Village archaeological site. The lecture is at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds as part of the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society.

The Morton Village was occupied about A.D. 1300 by migrants from the northern Midwest, part of what archaeologists call the Oneota cultural tradition. Dr. O'Gorman and Dr. Conner are investigating the relationship between these migrants and local native peoples. Their research is a collaboration between MSU and Dickson Mounds, in cooperation with the Nature Conservancy, which owns the land on which the site is located. Excavations were conducted in 2008 by an MSU field school; the second year of excavations begins May 27.

The presentation will review the results of the 2008 research and discuss plans for the 2009 work. The public is invited to view the excavations in progress at the site on Saturdays between May 30 and June 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Directions and other information are available at Dickson Mounds Museum.

IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome. For more information call 309-547-3721.
