First Nations Film and Video Festival

Chicago Gallery presents the First Nations Film and Video Festival Free admission 11:00 — 1:00 p.m. "Kissed by Lightening" Director Shelley Niro, Canada, Feature (89 minutes) with "Conversion" (9 minutes) The Haudaunosaunee (Iroquois) People have stories and legends that talk about transformations of human beings and the despair their communities had to endure to develop into a civilization incorporating trust, education and peace. Two women go on a road trip to New York to exhibit paintings which become an eventful array of diverse experiences. The women learn more about the territory of the Mohawk Valley where they are from. They witness ghosts and old world prejudices but in the end they are given permission to heal their hearts, move on and be more aware of the family they are surrounded by. 2:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
"REEL INJUN" Director Neil Diamond, Cree filmmaker (84 minutes) Cree filmmaker, Neil Diamond takes an entertaining and insightful look at the Holywood Indians, exploring the portrayal of Native Americans through a century of cinema."Shi-Shi-Etko" Director Kate Kroll and Producer Marilyn Thomas (9 minutes)
Kroll and Thomas are adapting a children's book, entitled Shi-Shi-Etko, into a short film. The book written by former Chilliwack resident Nicola Campbell, takes place in Sto:lo territory (Salish, Canada), four days before a young aboriginal girl is taken away to a residential school. Her family tries to instill a lasting sense of cultural history.
