ISM Chicago Gallery Special Event: AlphaBrick, a solo performance by Julie Caffey IN THE 2nd FLOOR GALLERY, THOMPSON CENTER

On Friday, December 18, 2009, Artist Julie Caffey will perform her new solo performance AlphaBrick from 12 noon to 12:45 P.M. This event is free and open to the public. There will be an informal question and answer session after the performance.

Starting with the letter A through Z, Interdisciplinary artist, Julie Caffey's new solo performance, AlphaBrick, takes us on an unpredictable, elliptical journey of memory presented as an alphabetic primer. Julie Caffey's alphabet performances are complex works that weave original text, movement, sound and objects into rich narratives about how identity is constructed by history and memory.

Julie Caffey, currently residing in the Bay Area, has a long association with Chicago's fringe performance/theater world. Caffey has created numerous original solo and ensemble performances including Simple Circulation, Sacred Geometry, Underwater Football, Alphabet-Obit, Alphabet Report and High Heeled Bricks at Link's Hall, Lunar Cabaret and the Prop Theater. Caffey also has an ongoing exchange of alphabet-based writing with Chicago based playwrite/performer Barrie Cole. Caffey has an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Columbia College Chicago and is a member of WingIt! Performance Ensemble based in Oakland CA. An excerpt of AlphaBrick premiered at ODC Theater in November, 2009.

Please join us for this special performance taking place from noon to 12:45 P.M. in the front gallery of the Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery. This event is part of our current exhibit The Urge to Embellish which continues until December 30, 2009.
