Installation by Illinois Artisan Julie Wishmeyer

  • Location: ISM Chicago Gallery, Chicago
  • Date: Thursday, October 15, 2009, 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

2-DAY EVENT IN THE ILLINOIS STATE MUSEUM CHICAGO GALLERY:
A participatory installation with Illinois Artisan Program member Julie Wishmeyer:
An Offering of Beauty to the Living and Dead

DATES: Thursday, October 15, 2009: 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Friday, October 16, 2009: and 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Julie Wishmeyer, Chicago artist and Illinois Artisan Program member, will
create an exuberantly embellished installation using objects from popular cultural. Sunglasses, hand mirrors, trinkets, toys, and sparkling gems that the artist has
collected over the years will be brought together and imbued with new life in an ofrenda, or offering table for the ancestors, in the Mexican Day of the Dead tradition. The final object is both functional and extravagant. The installation will take place in the front gallery of the Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery in conjunction with the Gallery's current exhibition The Urge to Embellish, an exhibition that addresses the almost universal impulse to decorate objects of daily life as a means of social expression.

Visitors to this free event are encouraged to help embellish the installation by adding their
own messages or placing objects provided by the artists. The artist will be
on hand both days from 1:00 to 2:00 pm to talk about her artwork and
process. This is a joint program of the Illinois Artisan Program
Chicago Shop and the Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery.
