Genus Toxolasma

Class Bivalvia : Subclass Paleoheterodonta : Genus Toxolasma

Toxolasma texasensis (Texas lilluput)
The Texas lilliput mussel is small (up to 2.5 inches in length), flattish and elongate, with a cloth-like surface texture of greenish-brown. The shell may have five or six angular ridges.
This species lives in the mud or sand in slow-flowing small to medium streams. In Illinois it occurs in the south along the Ohio River and its tributaries.
Conservation status: a southern species rarely occuring in the Midwest.
Taxonomy: Order Unionoida, Superfamily Unionoidea, Family Unionidae, Subfamily Lampsilinae.
