Quadrula metraneva (Monkeyface)
The monkeyface mussel shell is rounded, thick, and has knobs down the posterior ridge to the margin. The surface is green to light brown with zigzag markings. It grows to four inches in length. This species lives in the gravel or mixed sand and gravel of medium to large rivers. It has occurred in all of Illinois except the Chicago area.
Conservation status: uncommon but may be locally abundant
