Potamilus capax (Fat Pocketbook)
The Fat pocketbook mussel shell gets its common name from its large, inflated shell. Its yellowish to tan surface is smooth and shiny. It grows to five inches in length.
This species lives in mud or sand of slow-flowing large rivers. It is found along the Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio, and Wabash Rivers in Illinois.
Conservation status: Federally endangered. Endangered in Illinois.
Taxonomy: Order Unionoida, Superfamily Unionoidea, Family Unionidae, Subfamily Unioninae, Subfamily Lampsilinae.
