Pleurobema sintoxia (Round Pigtoe)
Round pigtoe mussel, also called Pleurobema coccineum (Rafinesque, 1820), has a thick, rounded shell. It grows to four inches in length. The smooth surface is reddish brown, light brown, or greenish brown in young shells, becoming darker in adults. Rays may be visible near the beak. This species lives in the mud, sand, and gravel of medium to large rivers. It occurs throughout Illinois.
