Obovaria olivaria (Hickorynut)
The hickorynut mussel shell is oval, thick, and smooth. It grows to four inches in length, is olive or yellowish brown, darkening with age. This species lives in the sand or mixed sand and gravel of large rivers.
Conservation status: widespread and common on the Wabash and lower Ohio Rivers in Illinois, but disappearing on the Mississippi and its tributaries.
