Class Bivalvia : Subclass Paleoheterodonta : Genus Lasmigona

Lasmigona costata (Fluted-shell)
The fluted-shell mussel has an elongate shell with sharply curved ends and straight margins. The umbos are low. The posterior slope is sculptured with ten to twenty rounded ridges. The shell is greenish yellow to dark brown, depending on age. It grows to seven inches in length.
This species lives in sand, mud, or fine gravel in slow to moderately flowing medium to large rivers. It occurs in all parts of Illinois.
Conservation status: Widespread and uncommon.
Taxonomy: Order Unionoida, Superfamily Unionoidea, Family Unionidae, Subfamily Anodontinae.
