Lampsilis teres (Yellow sandshell)
The yellow sandshell mussel shell is large (up to six inches in length), elongate, and thick. Young shells (which may have green rays) are smooth and very shiny, dulling with age. This species lives in the sand or fine gravel in slow-running areas of medium to large rivers. It has occurred in Illinois in all areas except the northeast.
