Hyalophora cecropia (Cecropia Moth)
The Cecropia is also known as the Robin Moth because of its red body and large size (wingspread from 4.3 to 5.8 inches). Other distinctive features are its large feathery antennae, large black eyespots at the tips of the forewings, and the orange comma-shaped spots on each wing. The wing coloration is dark brown.
This species is common in urban and suburban areas from May through July. The larvae feed on trees and shrubs, including apple, ash, birch, elm, and maple trees. It pupates in a loose, brown cocoon attached to twigs.
