Celastrina ladon (Spring Azure)
The Spring Azure, named for its blue coloring, has a wingspan of 1 to 1.25 inches. The females are a duller or light blue than males. There is also a summer variation called Celastina neglecta.
This species lives in and about forests, along woody stream banks, and in urban and suburban parks and gardens that have trees and shrubs. It is common in all areas of Illinois. Spring Azure adults are among the first butterflies seen in the spring. Females lay eggs on dogwoods, wild black cherries, viburnums, sumacs, and other trees. Adults feed on flower nectar and fly about high in the trees.
