Salix nigra (Black Willow)
Black willow grows in the eastern half of the united State, except for New England. It grows in wet soils along waterways and in flood plains. The leaning, often multiple trunks can grow to 100 feet tall, even taller in the south.
The shiny green leaves are from three to five inches in length, but only 3/8" in width, and tend to curve. Bark is very dark and deeply furrowed with forked ridges. Flowers (shown in this specimen) are one to three inches long with yellow, hairy scales.
