Quercus marilandica (Blackjack Oak)
Blackjack oak grows to 50 feet tall in dray sandy and clay soils in uplands and on slopes. Its range extends from southern Iowa eastward to New Jersey and extends south into southeast Texas across to western Florida.
This specimen shows the upper leaf surfaces of yellow-green and the lighter undersurfaces. Bark is black and deeply furrowed in a grid-like pattern. The acorns are elliptical and pointed, enclosed by a scaly cup and short stalk.
