Quercus macrocarpa (Bur Oak)
Bur oak grows from SE Saskatchewan south into Texas and east into Ohio, and locally in the northeast and southeast. It grows to 80 feet tall and 4 feet in diameter in dry uplands, sandy plains, and loamy slopes.
Dark green leaves are from four to ten inches long, broadest beyond the middle, and divided into two to three lobes on each side. Light gray bark has deep vertical ridges. The large acorns (3/4" to 2") have a large deep cap with hairy scales.
