Nyssa sylvatica (Blackgum)
Blackgum grows 50 to 100 feet tall in moist soils of valleys and uplands from southwest Maine to Florida, west to east Texas, and along a line from there to southern Michigan.
The crown is distinctive in being conical, sometimes with a flat top, and horizontal branches. The shiny green oblong leaves often crown the ends of the twigs. This specimen shows the 3/8" to 1/2" bluish-black fruit with its stone.
