ISM Herbarium : Prairie Herbs : Aster (Asteraceae)

Silphium terebinthinaceum (Prairie Dock)
Prairie Dock grows in deep-soil prairies in the eastern half of the tallgrass prairie region. The spade-shaped basal leaves stand erect with the edges only facing the sunlight. A large taproot also conserves water and make this plant drought-resistant. The stems are practically leafless. At the top are several branches with flower heads of disk and yellow ray flowers that measure two to three inches across. It blooms from summer to fall.
