Aster (Asteraceae)

ISM Herbarium : Prairie Herbs : Aster (Asteraceae)

Silphium perfoliatum (Cup Plant)
Cup Plant grows in moist areas, along streams, and near wet woodlands. Plants grow to eight feet tall on dark, smooth, square stems. The name Cup Plant comes from the opposite leaves' being united across the stem, forming a cup in which water collects.
Each flower head is on a branch, is two to four inches wide, and has 18-40 yellow ray flowers surrounding small tubular disk flowers of darker yellow. It blooms from summer into fall.
