Lithospermum canescens (Hoary Puccoon)
Hoary Puccoon grows to about fiften inches tall in mesic to dry prairies and rocky soils. The yellow flowers appear from spring to early summer in clusters at the tops of stems. Stems and the alternate, stalkless leaves are hairy. This specimen also shows the root system.
