Liatris pycnostachya (Thick Spike Blazing Star)
Thick Spike Blazing Star grows to five feet tall in dry to mesic prairies and moist depressions. This specimen shows the long (up to 1') basal leaves and shorter stem leaves. Stems are usually hairy. The large flower spike is made up of small flower heads. Each head consists of usually five to ten small purple disk flowers with five lobes and two protruding threadlike styles. Flowering season is from midsummer to early fall.
