Liatris pycnostachya (Thick Spike Blazing Star)
This specimen of Thick Spike Blazing Star shows the bulb and root system, the long basal leaves, the short stem leaves, and the thick spike of flower heads. This plant is common in mesic to dry prairies and flowers from midsummer to early fall.
