Helianthus mollis (Ashy Sunflower)
Ashy Sunflower grows from norhtern Illinois southward in upland prairies. A grayish green color gives the plant its name. It grows to three feet tall. Leaves and stems are very hairy. The opposite leaves are stiff, unstalked, and rounded at the base. The 2 to 4 inch wide flower heads are made up of a yellow disk with brown bracts surrounded by up to 30 yellow ray flowers.
