ISM Herbarium : Prairie Herbs : Aster (Asteraceae)
Cacalia atriplicifolium (Pale Indian Plantain)
This specimen of Pale Indian Plantain shows the top part of a stem in bloom and a whole leaf from near the bottom of a stem. It also clearly shows the white underside of the leaves that gives the plant its name. The tubular flowers are a greenish-white.
The plant grows in mesic to dry prairies and in open woodlands. It can reach eight feet in height, but averages about half that.
