The leaves diminish in size up the stem, the lower ones being up to a foot in length and shaped like maple leaves. The upper leaves are small, sometimes appearing only as bracts. Flowers appear in clusters at the top of the stems. The greenish-white flower head consists of five cylindrical disk flowers.
