Brick Laying
Adrian Troy (1901 - 1977)

woodcut, circa 1935

Adrian Troy was born in Hull, England. Troy belonged to the Chicago Society of Artists and the American Artists Congress. He taught art at the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1960s and 1970s. He worked for the Illinois WPA graphics program in Chicago, where, among other projects, he illustrated books produced by the Writer's Project, such as Cavalcade of the American Negro and Idaho Lore.

This woodcut illustrates the WPA theme of The American Worker. It shows the high contrast and strong textures possible in the woodcut medium.
