Ship Fitters
Dox Thrash (1892 - 1965)

Dox Thrash was born in Griffin, Georgia. After serving in World War I, he returned to continue his studies at the Art Insitute of Chicago. He was a printmaker and in 1937, during the depths of the Depression, he joined the WPA graphics workshop in Philadelphia. There he experimented with different printing techniques and materials. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has about fifty prints by this African-American artist.
Aquatint prints are made by applying resin on the plate according to the artist's design, then dipping the plate into acid, which eats away the bare or lightly covered areas. The plate is printed. The effect is that of areas of varied tones, rather than lines.
