William Schwartz was born in Smorgon, Russia and immigrated to Chicago in 1913. His art training was at the Art Institute. His style was modernist. He worked for the Chicago WPA in the easel and graphics programs. Schwartz became an important Chicago painter known for his modern genre, figural painting, landscapes, and non-objective work.
