Cropper's Return
Mac (Emmanuel) Raboy (1914 - 1967)

engraving on paper, 1937
4 4/16 x 6 inches

Mac Raboy was born in New York City. He made genre pictures, illustrations, prints, and cartoons during his art career. He worked for the New York City WPA graphics program. He is best known for his work in comics. He drew the Captain Marvel, Jr. comics in the early 1940s, and drew the Flash Gordon strip from 1948 until he died in 1967.

An artist creates an engraving by scratching and carving into a metal plate with metal tools, then applying ink to the plate. The ink goes into the grooves created by the engraving tools. Excess ink is wiped off and the plate is printed under pressure that pushes the ink onto the paper.
