The Slave Mart
Virginia Kaar (1910 - 1966)
monoprint on paper, circa 1939
12 x 16 inches
Virginia Kaar worked for the Illinois WPA graphics program. The subject matter of this print is the employment agency for domestic servants; a rich woman is interviewing a prospective servant. In the background are views of the agent advertising jobs on the chalk board in front of the office and the applicant's negative image of her work.
To make a monoprint, the artist paints a plate with slow-drying ink or paint, then by hand or machine, presses the paper onto it, creating only one impression from each plate.
