Sunday on the Farm
Thorvalt Arnst Hoyer (1872 - 1949)

oil on canvas, 1936
23 3/4 x 35 5/8 inches

Thorvalt Hoyer was born in Copenagen, Denmark. Before settling in Chicago about 1915, he toured the world with an vaudeville acrobatic team. He worked for the Illinois WPA easel program from 1938-43. By trade he was a house painter.

Thorvalt paints in oils in a careful, naive style (his formal art training was his stint as a clean-up boy at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen). He drew out his compositions in pencil and transferred them to the canvas. The composition radiates a silence of the countryside with an absence of people and movement.
