Stuart Davis (1892 - 1964)

Stuart Davis was born in Philadelphia, but spent his art career in New York, where he was influenced by the Armory Show of 1912, and Paris, where he studied with Jan Matulka, near the studios of Alexander Calder and Isamu Noguchi, fellow Modernists. He worked for the WPA from 1930 to 1939. Later he taught at universities and wrote extensively about art, as well as painted in oils, gouache, and created murals. His style was a combination of Realism and Cubist abstraction.
Davis made this lithograph by drawing on a stone or metal plate with a greasy pencil, fixing it chemically, dampening the plate, inking it, and running it and the paper through a lithographic plate.
