7 3/4 x 35 1/4 inches
Gift of the Artist
This painting and its companion piece illustrate the novel, Treasure Island. This panel depicts life on the island, the fight at the stockade, and the members of the expedition. The artist said that Treasure Island was her favorite book when she was a child. This was a study for a mural that was installed in the Robert Louis Stevenson Playground Field House in Oak Park, Illinois. Before installation, the mural was exhibited at a WPA exhibit in the east wing of the Art Institute. It measured sixteen feet in length.
Tempera is a water-based paint made with powdered pigments mixed with a binder such as glue or egg yolk and water.
