Treasure Island
Frances Badger (1904 - 1997)
tempera on illustration board, circa 1935-38
8 x 33.5 inches
Gift of the Artist
This painting and its companion piece are studies for a mural that was installed in the Robert Louis Stevenson Playground Field House in Oak Park, Illinois, as part of the WPA Illinois Murals project. This panel, which depicts the beginning of the story, at the inn, in the cove, with the "seafaring man with one leg," Long John Silver and his parrot, and Jim Hawkins and his mother. The Hispaniola is in the background.
The artist made the painting by using tempera paint(a mixture of powdered pigments and a binder like glue) on a gessoed board.
From this sketch, Badger made the mural, which measured sixteen feet long. After installation, she touched up details in the painting. This sketch is all that is left of the project because the Oak Park Field House was destroyed.
