Ida York Abelman studied at the National Academy of Design and the Design Laboratory in New York. Her work was exhibited at the Federal Art Gallery, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Philadelphia Art Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery.
To make a lithographic print, the artist draws or paints on a limestone, zinc, or aluminum plate with a greasy crayon or oily ink. A cehmical fixes the image on the plate. To print, the artist dampens the stone, rolls ink over it, lays paper over it, and uses a lithographic press to transfer the image. Only the greasy areas of the plate attract the ink. The lithographic plate produces multiple prints.
