Bear with Fish Emmanuel Viviano (1907 - 1980)
plaster, n.d. 11 x 10 x 9 inches Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Cheskin
Emmanuel Viviano was active in Chicago as a painter and sculptor. His work was exhibited at the Art Institute from 1935 to 1945. This piece was made in an Illinois WPA sculpture program. It is of carved and painted plaster. Viviano's work appeared in a 1956 Houston Contemporary Art Association exhibit called "Monumentality in Sculpture." This bear is an example of that concept; it appears to have massive volume, although it is a small piece.
