Symphonic Forms #40 William Schwartz (1896 - 1976)
oil on canvas, 1938 30 x 40 inches Gift of Mr. and Mrs. William Schwartz
The painter of this piece, artist William Schwartz, said, "In both music and art, I believe that the great thing is the creation, in an individual way, of harmony. In art . . . harmony may be of three sorts — of color, of form, and of line. Mastery of one of these elements is unsatisfactory . . . I strive for the mastery of all three."
This painting was created when Schwartz worked for the WPA.
