Howell’s Whistling in the Dark demonstrates an awareness of “color-field” painting. Color-field painting presents color in a variety of guises but always as the principal subject matter. Elwood Howell’s painting demonstrates a lyrical approach, using delicately layered drips and spatters to create an atmospheric quality of twilight. His more recent work deals more directly with the landscape.
