Image of shaman's helper spirit

The image is made of a root covered with moose hide, with fringe at the outer margin. According to the Evenks, the spirit of hunting resides inside the semi-oval. It was used in rituals to achieve success in hunting and to obtain the vital forces of nature.

Transbaikalia, Nerchinsky District, near the village of Kykery, late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Wood, suede of moose, sinew threads.

Length 26 cm, width 20.5 cm.
