Bag for strike-a-light

Image by Musée départmental de Solutré
Women tied these bags inside their aprons. This bag contained flint and tinder and a strike-a-light that hung on a small strap. The surface of the bag is decorated with a geometric design, a rosette embroidered with colored seed beads. The straps from which the strike-a-light hangs are decorated with strings of colored beads and delicate metal plates. Fires were started by striking flint on a strike-a-light to produce sparks that fell on tinder, such as dry moss or rabbit fur.
