Illinois Power
presents

Quiltmaking allows the sharing of ideas and traditions that link individuals, families, and communities. The history of a quilt can be viewed as a thread of associations that all too often becomes broken over time. Amish quiltmakers, with their reverence of tradition, love of family, and faithfulness to beliefs, have created quilts that share common characteristics linked to their culture, yet are as unique as the individual quiltmakers. The work of Illinois Amish quiltmakers is relatively unknown compared to quiltmakers in Amish communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. The Illinois State Museum is proud to present for the first time this selection of Illinois Amish quilts. These quilts, among the finest folk arts produced in Illinois, represent the traditions of Illinois Amish quiltmaking to the world.

From 2001 to 2004 the exhibition will travel to the Southern Illinois Art Gallery in Whittington, The Illinois Art Gallery in Chicago, The Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery in Lockport, and Dickson Mounds Museum in Lewistown. For more information please call (217) 782-7386.
