How did the Native Americans view the Jesuits? |
The Indians come to me. "What shall become of us?" they cry. "What will happen to our children if there is no Holy Father?" And what should I tell them? We taught them to believe, and they trusted us. And now we are going to abandon them. I am ashamed. All my brothers believe we have no choice. Perhaps it is the will of God. There are so few of us; perhaps it is too much to think that we could make a stand. One cannot fight alone. Who knows, the British and the Spanish have their own design. I fear the life we have known is changing, and this is only the beginning. I cannot hold back the will of God. But what is it? |
