Catlinite pipe Catlinite pipe, Calhoun County.

Oneota people had access to catlinite, a red clay hardened by pressure, heat, or cementation. Most of the catlinite found on Oneota sites is from the upper Missouri River valley region near Pipestone, Minnesota.

Trade established during the Late Archaic continued. Protohistoric people had access to marine shell from the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic Ocean and copper from the upper Great Lakes region. Archaeologists do not know what people in Illinois used to trade for shell and copper. Both of these materials were used to make ornaments.
